Since we are a German team, our press releases are mostly in German. If you are missing some information or just interested in Project TW4XP, please feel free to contact us, we will answer fast (and in english).
Germany-Based Team TW4XP to Participate in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Award Ceremony on September 16 in Washington, D.C.
Ceremony Culminates Multiyear Challenge to Deliver Production-Capable, Super Fuel-Efficient Vehicles; Team TW4XP Vehicle will be on Display at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
Project TW4XP, short for “Three Wheeler for X Prize” will be featured in a display of super fuel efficient vehicles, as part of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Up to three of the vehicles in this display will walk away with their share of a $10 million prize purse, funded by Progressive Insurance.
The Rosenthal, Germany based team proved their entry vehicle could meet all of the competition’s strict requirements, including the ability to achieve 100 miles per gallon or the energy equivalent (MPGe), CO2 emissions below 200 grams per mile and to survive grueling real-world safety, efficiency, emissions, durability and range tests. In fact, Project TW4XP, a three-wheeled electric vehicle, achieved nearly 200 MPGe and demonstrated remarkable agility and stability.
As a finalist, Team TW4XP remains in contention to be awarded half of the $5M purse which will be split between two winners in the Alternative Class – one vehicle with side-by-side seating, and one vehicle with tandem seating.
The construction as a three-wheeler in combination with sidestick steering revolutionizes the driving experience. Project TW4XP offers a Pedal Drive option that makes the vehicle a Human-Power-Hybrid for healthy living and fun. The highly efficient TW4XP easily achieves 100 miles electric range at highway speeds. In addition, a range extender fitted as a backpack provides an even greater range if desired. The TW4XP is ready for Vehicle to Grid which allows you to charge directly from both solar panels and windmills, power your home from the stored electricity in your electric vehicle during power outages, and improves the overall efficiency and quality of the entire electricity grid.
From the more than 140 vehicles that started in this competition, only nine passed all tests to start in the Final Stage, and 7 of them were qualified to participate in the “Final Race”, the Combined Performance and Energy Test. Because there was only one team remaining in each of the Alternative Tandem and Mainstream classes, the winner was already determined. However in the side-by-side class, a final “race” among the 5 qualified teams was required to determine a final winner. This exceptionally challenging race was held on the 27th of August, 2010 between Li-ion Motors Wave, RaceAbout ERA, Aptera 2e, Zap Alias and Project TW4XP.
At 138 MPGe, Team TW4XP achieved the highest mileage among the competitors in this “Combined Performance and Energy Test”. Quite an achievement considering the race was run at highway speeds, on a track including a chicane, with tight turns, causing the vehicles to brake and accelerate on each of the 50 laps for 100 miles. Temperatures for the race exceeded 90º F during another event in which the TW4XP recorded an astounding 175 MPGe, leading the team to believe 200 MPGe is within reach.
Team leader Martin Moescheid said, “It has been an honor to be a part of the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE competition, to have surpassed all X PRIZE tests to become a finalist and to have competed with so many fine teams. This competition, though extremely challenging, demonstrates that another kind of vehicle is able to be provided soon. Extremely environmently friendly and desirable vehicles. I think, the automobile market will change dramatically. And we will be part of this.
Project TW4XP is inspired by the TWIKE, a German Light-Electric Vehicle which is already in production by the German company FINE Mobile GmbH. Many members of Team TW4XP are also involved in the TWIKE business. Together with the US company Sugar Rides, there are plans for bringing the TWIKE to the American market as well as setting up production for the TW4XP. We are seeking out forward thinking partners to capture what is sure to be a long-term growth opportunity for the company, its partners and its investors.
ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE AUTOMOTIVE X PRIZE
The goal of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices. Ten million dollars in prizes will be awarded to the teams that win a stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 Miles per gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe). The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE will place a major focus on efficiency, safety, affordability, and the environment. It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars. This progress is needed because today's oil consumption is unsustainable and because automotive emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change. The ten million dollar purse and partial funding for prize operations was provided by Progressive Insurance. Additional major funding for education, outreach, and technical operations was provided by $9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. Additional funding for prize operations was provided by Cisco and private donors. For more information about the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, please visit www.progressiveautoxprize.org
